Join us as we present the story of this historic small battle portraying the bravery and determination of Isle of Wight County citizen-soldiers under the command of Smithfield’s own Colonel Josiah Parker.

From 1948 to 1949, the Smithfield Terminal Line connected the meat-packing houses of Smithfield with the C&O Railway terminal in Newport News. Join us for this lecture where we will learn about the shortest railroad in Virginia, the logistics of this operation involving a mile of track, Alco 2-6-2T steam locomotive #6, a landing barge, reefer car floats and steam tugs.

WHAT’S COOKING?

The first recorded cookbook is said consist of four clay tablets from 1700 BCE in Ancient Mesopotamia. Today, most homes have an eclectic mix of cookbooks – everything from those purchased for a church fundraiser to handwritten family heirlooms. This lecture highlights cookbook history as well as their influence on history, manners and nutrition over the years. Bring your favorite cookbook to share! The event will be held at the Blackwater Regional Library, Smithfield Branch, 255 James St, Smithfield.
1864 BATTLE OF SMITHFIELD: 160TH COMMEMORATION
9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, February 4, 2024
Join us on Main Street for the 160th anniversary of “the Town of Smithfield’s most dramatic event.” This engagement between Union and Confederate troops saw artillery and musket fire reverberating up and down Main Street eventually resulting in the destruction of the U.S. Army Gunboat Smith Briggs. The day will feature living historians and scheduled events at the Isle of Wight County Museum, Ivy Hill Cemetery, Christ Episcopal Church and the 1750 Courthouse.
At the end of the 1864 engagement, the locals were said to have enjoyed coffee in Smithfield for the first time in a long while. You can do the same with a special brew at Cure Coffeehouse and an espresso stout from Wharf Hill Brewing!

FORT BOYKIN WALKING TOUR

March 29 marks National Vietnam Veterans Day, and today's lecture will feature U.S. Navy veteran Chris Torre who served aboard the USS Takelma, ATF 113, an ocean-going fleet salvage tug from 1967 to 1968. He will share his experiences of his service and afterwards, other veterans will be invited to share their stories.

Local historian Albert Burckard along with former missile mechanic Ira Abbott host a short presentation and walking tour of this site which contains the original barracks, mess hall, administration and recreation building, officer/non-commissioned officer family housing, fueling area and underground missile magazines. Event begins in the Recreation Hall (former soldier barracks) at Nike Park, 13036 Nike Park Road, Carrollton.

JOSIAH PARKER’S 273RD BIRTHDAY

Born in 1751 in Isle of Wight County, Josiah Parker was an American politician, Revolutionary War officer and Virginia planter who served in the U.S. House of Representatives. Today’s lecture will highlight his life, career and influence on Isle of Wight County.

Most people are only familiar with Virginia Miliary Institute's role at the Battle of New Market, but the Corps of Cadets performed a number of duties throughout the course of the war. This brief lecture explains how VMI came to be a key element of the State's defensive organization and examines the different roles it performed from the war's beginning to its very end. Our lecturer is Peter Underwood, a Suffolk native, VMI graduate, retired Marine Corps officer, history professor at the U.S. Naval Academy and professor of policy and strategy at the U.S. Naval War College.

Today marks the 103rd anniversary of the huge fire that radically changed the town’s economy. Citizens raced down to the docks to the loud screams of steamboat whistles and the clanging of church bells. The conflagration consumed most of the industry that had made Smithfield “The peanut capital of the world” and was only stopped by the well-timed arrival of Suffolk’s new “motor pump” fire engine. Come to the museum to learn the dramatic story of the blaze that turned the town’s focus from peanuts to ham.
THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF THE MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE: A TRAVELING EXHIBIT
August 20 to September 6, 2024
The American Friends of Lafayette’s traveling exhibit tells the important stories of Lafayette’s life and legacy including his American Revolution participation, his critical role in cementing the Franco-American Alliance, his lifelong passion for human rights and his return as Guest of the Nation in 1824-1825. Also highlighted are efforts of the American Friends of Lafayette to commemorate this bicentennial in 2024-2025.
This exhibit strives to make Lafayette’s story more accessible and relevant to today’s citizens accenting the connections between Lafayette and George Washington as well as more recent history including the 2002 decision to proclaim Lafayette an honorary citizen of the United States.
The final day of the exhibit’s stay at the Isle of Wight County Museum is Lafayette’s 267th birthday. The museum will host Frank Womble of the American Friends of Lafayette for a lecture and birthday celebration.

Today in 1757, the Marquis de Lafayette was born. Join us for this event...and a celebratory dessert!
This presentation with Frank Womble of the American Friends of Lafayette and Isle of Wight County Museum staff will include an overview of Lafayette's life and legacy as well as information on his connections to Isle of Wight County, his participation in the American Revolution and his lifelong passion for human rights.
As part of the event, guests will be able to enjoy The Life and Legacy of The Marquis de Lafayette, a traveling exhibit developed by The American Friends of Lafayette which tells the important stories of Lafayette’s life as well as a focus on his return as Guest of the Nation in 1824 and 1825. This exhibit strives to make Lafayette’s story more accessible and relevant to today’s citizens.
On this final day of this exhibit's stay at the Isle of Wight County Museum, guests will be to engage with and ask questions of the American Friends of Lafayette who will be in attendance.
The event will conclude with a celebratory reception hosted by the Colonel William Allen Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
The free event is an official event of Isle of Wight County's Virginia American Revolution 250 Commemoration.

LUNCH & LEARN: A VITAL CONNECTION…THE JAMES RIVER BRIDGE

Opened November 17, 1928, the James River Bridge has linked Warwick County/Newport News to Isle of Wight County for 96 years. This look-back examines life before the bridge - when colonial ferries and steamers served this purpose. The historical journey continues with the dedication of the original crossing which was hailed as the world’s longest bridge over water and the construction of the current structure. It further details the story of how the bridge received its official name.

VIRGINIA’S MAIN SQUEEZE: A HISTORY OF CIDER

When the adventurers aboard the Susan Constant, Discovery and Godspeed stepped foot onto Virginian soil, they brought with them the traditional English love of cider. They were required by statute to plant orchards, and the apple played a central part in the development of the colony as its juice became the favored libation of every class of society. From the modest laborer to the table of Thomas Jefferson, cider was Virginia’s tipple of choice, and more than four hundred years later, the libation is enjoying a renaissance. Author Alistair Reece tells the story of cider in the Old Dominion in his new book Virginia Cider: A Scrumptious History. Join us for a discussion of cider, a book signing and some tasty (non-alcoholic) samples.

1864 BATTLE OF SMITHFIELD: 160TH COMMEMORATION

Join us on Main Street for the 160th anniversary of “the Town of Smithfield’s most dramatic event.” This engagement between Union and Confederate troops saw artillery and musket fire reverberating up and down Main Street eventually resulting in the destruction of the U.S. Army Gunboat Smith Briggs. The day will feature living historians and scheduled events at the Isle of Wight County Museum, Ivy Hill Cemetery, Christ Episcopal Church and the 1750 Courthouse.
At the end of the 1864 engagement, the locals were said to have enjoyed coffee in Smithfield for the first time in a long while. You can do the same with a special brew at Cure Coffeehouse and an espresso stout from Wharf Hill Brewing!

Most people are only familiar with Virginia Miliary Institute's role at the Battle of New Market, but the Corps of Cadets performed a number of duties throughout the course of the war. This brief lecture explains how VMI came to be a key element of the State's defensive organization and examines the different roles it performed from the war's beginning to its very end. Our lecturer is Peter Underwood, a Suffolk native, VMI graduate, retired Marine Corps officer, history professor at the U.S. Naval Academy and professor of policy and strategy at the U.S. Naval War College.

Today marks the 103rd anniversary of the huge fire that radically changed the town’s economy. Citizens raced down to the docks to the loud screams of steamboat whistles and the clanging of church bells. The conflagration consumed most of the industry that had made Smithfield “The peanut capital of the world” and was only stopped by the well-timed arrival of Suffolk’s new “motor pump” fire engine. Come to the museum to learn the dramatic story of the blaze that turned the town’s focus from peanuts to ham.
THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF THE MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE: A TRAVELING EXHIBIT
August 20 to September 6, 2024
The American Friends of Lafayette’s traveling exhibit tells the important stories of Lafayette’s life and legacy including his American Revolution participation, his critical role in cementing the Franco-American Alliance, his lifelong passion for human rights and his return as Guest of the Nation in 1824-1825. Also highlighted are efforts of the American Friends of Lafayette to commemorate this bicentennial in 2024-2025.
This exhibit strives to make Lafayette’s story more accessible and relevant to today’s citizens accenting the connections between Lafayette and George Washington as well as more recent history including the 2002 decision to proclaim Lafayette an honorary citizen of the United States.
The final day of the exhibit’s stay at the Isle of Wight County Museum is Lafayette’s 267th birthday. The museum will host Frank Womble of the American Friends of Lafayette for a lecture and birthday celebration.

Today in 1757, the Marquis de Lafayette was born. Join us for this event...and a celebratory dessert!
This presentation with Frank Womble of the American Friends of Lafayette and Isle of Wight County Museum staff will include an overview of Lafayette's life and legacy as well as information on his connections to Isle of Wight County, his participation in the American Revolution and his lifelong passion for human rights.
As part of the event, guests will be able to enjoy The Life and Legacy of The Marquis de Lafayette, a traveling exhibit developed by The American Friends of Lafayette which tells the important stories of Lafayette’s life as well as a focus on his return as Guest of the Nation in 1824 and 1825. This exhibit strives to make Lafayette’s story more accessible and relevant to today’s citizens.
On this final day of this exhibit's stay at the Isle of Wight County Museum, guests will be to engage with and ask questions of the American Friends of Lafayette who will be in attendance.
The event will conclude with a celebratory reception hosted by the Colonel William Allen Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
The free event is an official event of Isle of Wight County's Virginia American Revolution 250 Commemoration.

The historical journey continues with the dedication of the original crossing which was hailed as the world’s longest bridge over water and the construction of the current structure. It further details the story of how the bridge received its official name.

When the adventurers aboard the Susan Constant, Discovery and Godspeed stepped foot onto Virginian soil, they brought with them the traditional English love of cider. They were required by statute to plant orchards, and the apple played a central part in the development of the colony as its juice became the favored libation of every class of society. From the modest laborer to the table of Thomas Jefferson, cider was Virginia’s tipple of choice, and more than four hundred years later, the libation is enjoying a renaissance. Author Alistair Reece tells the story of cider in the Old Dominion in his new book Virginia Cider: A Scrumptious History. Join us for a discussion of cider, a book signing and some tasty (non-alcoholic) samples.
